Beginnings: " The Sense of Place Collection"

A different Sense of Place.

Nostalgia evokes a wide range of emotions. Sometimes sadness and longing, sometimes comfort. But I equate nostalgia with love  and contentment. In developing this collection I turned to places in my life that I love dearly. These places I chose to paint are deeply personal, but they also convey a sense of familiarity I hope others find comfort in as well.

Traveling to northern Michigan, a place I spent countless trips with family and friends out in the woods or swimming at the lake. I am deeply inspired by the endless forests and lake shores of this magical place. Building this collection has been such a gift, although I currently live in North Carolina and travel back to Michigan often, it is such a joy to immerse myself in the memories, feelings, and colors of my home state.

With bold brush strokes in a natural color palette, I want to build upon familiar compositions of fields, forests, and water. Pairing wide open spaces with intimate details of reaching tree branches and impressions of colorful grasses  to create works that encourage contemplation in an endless world of contrast and pattern.

While developing a central theme for this collection, I turned to my sketchbook to draft a cohesive collection and define values. Sorting through photos and memories, filling pages with loose sketches, I assembled a group of beautiful landscapes which I believe capture the spirit of Michigan and the Midwest.

There will be five paintings, sizes listed below, and will range in price from $125 - $475. Painted in acrylic on stretched canvas and varnish finished, these will be ready to hang with hardware installed. All paintings include a Certificate of Authenticity signed by me.

I imagine these pieces hanging in a cozy corner of your home or cabin, like a window to what could be just a few steps outside. With their contemporary style these paintings could live happily in a variety of spaces traditional to modern alike.
